Remote jobs that quietly need your zip code

Saw three “remote” listings this week that auto-reject unless your address is within 50 miles “for payroll tax,” even though the posting says work from anywhere. Is this just compliance theater via ATS filters, or is there a legit reason I’m missing?

I’ve seen this too — usually not ATS cosplay; they’re only registered for payroll/withholding and workers’ comp in certain states, and your zip can create “nexus” they’re avoiding. Ask the recruiter for their supported states or if they’ll use a PEO; sometimes that 50‑mile rule is really about occasional office days or equipment pickup.
