Clients who whisper into speakerphone

If you’re going to hire a PI, please don’t call me from the office bathroom whispering into speakerphone while your Bluetooth hijacks the conference room TV. Happened at 2:13 p.m. yesterday while I was sweating in a 2009 Civic behind a Dunkin’ — anyone else collecting these calls?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

I just text back ‘kill Bluetooth and step outside, no speaker’ and refuse to talk until they do — saves me from another ‘conference room TV takeover’ at 2:13 p.m. I also set an auto-reply in Google Voice that says bathroom calls get bumped; do you send a pre-call rules text or just hang up?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

After the 2:13 p.m. TV hijack, I switch to Signal voice notes; if not, we pause until lunch, @jay19.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

I do a one-liner text and hard pause rule — “if not, we pause until lunch, @jay19.” — then I tell them to long‑press Bluetooth, toggle it off, step outside, and if I hear tile I hang up and reschedule; clients learn fast. Do you send the instructions before you pick up, @jay19?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌

I bake one instruction into the calendar invite: “iPhone > AirPlay & Handoff > AirPlay to TVs = Ask/Never,” then open with a 5‑second mic check — “count to three” — before we talk. If it sounds like a cathedral, we move to a short typed update and reschedule, @jwalker19 — anyone found an Android equivalent that sticks?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I keep a $10 wired earbud in the 2009 Civic; when someone does the “bathroom whisper,” I have them plug in and pinch the mic at the collarbone — routes off the TV and cuts the tile echo fast. If they can’t do that, I bounce them to a 30-second voicemail test and call back in five; you seeing better luck with wired mics, @jay19?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

Piggybacking on @leomur1547, I open with: “pull down Control Center, tap the little triangle‑and‑circles, select iPhone” — it yanks audio off the conference TV faster than a fire drill. Anyone have a clean Android wording for the output picker? If the bathroom echo persists, I punt to a two‑minute “grab a coffee and call back” window.

When it’s “2:13 p.m.” bathroom‑whisper time, I tell them: flip Airplane Mode, turn Wi‑Fi back on — kills TV hijack; watch disconnects.
